“Whasnu Puuyca?”–Paleoindian Tom Jones, Wells Creek Crater, TN, ca. 1982

Georgia has a rich cultural heritage that stretches back many thousands of years. Archaeologists are time keepers and the story tellers for a large portion of it. This is one archaeologist’s blog.

The Wells Creek Sagaa short semi-fictional story

In the early spring of 1982 a team of archaeologists from Memphis State University descended into the Wells Creek Crater along the Cumberland River in central Tennessee.  Their mission was to excavate portions of an archaeological site that was in the path of a proposed highway corridor. At the helm was Jerald, alias Big Richard Dickson, and the rest of the crew were hardened professionals from Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, and Tennessee. They lived together in a house on a hilltop in Erin, Tennesse. The former Grand Dragoon of the Tennessee KKK was their immediate neighbor. A roly poly truck driving man named Bones also lived next door.  Four members of the crew, as it turned out, were also members of an Athens “New Wave” band, known as the Slant Six. Evenings after work were spent eating  cheese dip , drinking the cheapest beer in Cumberland City, and composing obnoxious songs. I was the leader of the band.
